Abstract: Educational technology researchers are finding enhanced levels of engagement, communication skills, and content learning gains when elementary students participate in virtual worlds learning. This paper provides an overview of a virtual world mission based on the ancient Puebloan Civilization using the Quest Atlantis program, a research project implemented jointly through Indiana University and Arizona State University. It offers a participatory, effective classroom approach for teachers to provide a new technology setting for student engagement in informational reading while experiencing historical content in a 3D world. By incorporating virtual environments, teachers are afforded a fresh approach to integrating across social studies, literacy, math, and science while increasing student engagement in the overall learning experience. The author is a co-researcher with Indiana University and Arizona State University and has used Quest Atlantis with elementary students and with college students in teacher education method courses
