Abstract: This paper will discuss the need for educators to be more proactive in their use of emerging technologies. By examining the development of technology, and its implementation in the online classroom, the presenters will demonstrate from a historical perspective why online educators must be proactive in their adoption and use of emerging technologies. There will also be a discussion of new tools to assist online teachers in moving closer to the goal of communicative asynchronous online classrooms; finally, the argument will be made that online educators need to be more engaged with developers in order to create the necessary programs for successful online environments.
