Abstract: This report is on the design, implementation and refinement process of gamification system in foreign language classroom to objectively assess classroom participation and performance. Given that students are expected to become proficient in listening and speaking of the target language, classroom participation assessment is highly dependent on instructor’s subjectivity. Two gamification systems were developed for the Mandarin Chinese students in Middle School and in High School. During pilot phase, these systems provided concrete and objective data to assess students’ classroom participation and performance.
