Facebook Usage, Social Networks, and Social Support and University Undergraduate Women
Abstract: Interviews about Facebook usage and social support were conducted with five university women who identified themselves at extremes of Facebook usage (high vs. low) and mattering to others (high vs. low). Network characteristics, support quality, and open ended responses to questions about Facebook use were matched with a visual display of the social network identified by the respondents. Covariation of these factors was explored, with some modest evidence of the association between mattering and network density among Facebook friends. During this roundtable presentation we will present our initial analyses, and elicit feedback from participants regarding the implications of the findings for university education.
