Intercultural Communicative Competence in SCMC and ACMC: A Systematic Literature Review
Abstract: This systematic literature review synthesizes empirical research on Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) in asynchronous and synchronous computer mediated communication in the context of second language learning. A total of 35 studies published in peer-reviewed journals from 2003-2012 were included. The language contexts ranged from intercultural exchanges between countries as well as ESL classrooms. Features of language learning context, technology type, and research design of each study were coded and analyzed. Preliminary analysis suggests that asynchronous computer mediated communication seemed to be the most preferred mode of communication because asynchronous communication allows for reflection and a deeper cultural understanding. As this world becomes more globalized, it is important to explore ICC, especially as it relates to language learning aspects.
