When the Ground Settles: Positive Changes to Teacher Education Practices Following the 2010/2011 Earthquakes in Canterbury, New Zealand
Abstract: On 4th September 2010 and 22nd February, 2011, two major earthquakes struck the Canterbury region of New Zealand, immediately impacting all staff and students across the University of Canterbury. Three years on however, the ‘aftershock’ of these events have continued to inform and, perhaps surprisingly, positively impact educational practices of staff and students at the College of Education. This paper includes reflections of pedagogical changes in pre-service teacher education practices as the ground settles in the ‘wake of the quakes’. The paper also highlights related research conducted after the events, plus a summary of lessons learned that will enable other teacher educators to prepare for the unexpected.
