Abstract: Policymakers are concerned about implications of student-teacher connections on social networking sites (SNS), often banning them; but, there is meager evidence to lean on. This paper presents results of two quantitative studies, involving secondary school Israeli teachers (N=667) and students (N=180), examining Facebook-based teacher-student communication and relationships. Findings reveal that teachers using Facebook are perceived as younger, caring, open-minded and socially involved by both teachers and students. Findings also suggest association between variables of the perceived characteristics and attitudes towards banning policies and between perceived characteristics and using Facebook for learning. We conclude that certain teachers may be more likely to use Facebook, and that personal/professional characteristics may be associated with attitudes towards banning policy and usage in education; these teachers may be innovators within schools.
