Abstract: This paper explores the state of currently available educational Augmented Reality (AR) applications for mobile devices. AR is broadly defined as the use of a technological medium to “overlay” information on the physical world. Using a scale designed to categorize the educational purpose and function of AR technologies, this paper describes a process for evaluating the educational power and intent of the AR applications. Further, this paper lays out conclusions about the relative strengths and weaknesses of the current educational AR apps. Special emphasis is placed on discussing the barriers that commonly stand in the way of developing and deploying effective AR applications, the features of “good” educational AR applications, and the lessons that can be drawn from the relatively few AR implementations that go beyond the most rudimentary levels of educational usability.
