Abstract: This research paper uses and modified the original UTAUT research model in order to investigate the acceptance of technology by first year students at four universities in South Africa. The research used four constructs which are: effort expectancy, social influence, performance expectancy and facilitating conditions. Three moderating factors instead of four were used in the research study. Behavioral intentions mediated the three (effort expectancy, social influence, performance expectancy) constructs. A closed-ended questionnaire was used to collect data from first year students at four South African Universities. A total of 1023 usable questionnaires out of 1500 distributed were captured into SPSS Statistical Package. The results showed that performance expectancy, effort expectancy and behavioral intention had a significant influence on the acceptance of technology, whereas social influence and facilitating conditions did not. The final model had a predicting power of 60.8 percent.
