Adapting Online Courses to Comply with Federal Guidelines and Legislation for Students with Disabilities
Abstract: The evidence shows that there has been steady but limited progress in areas leading to improved quality of life for people with disabilities. However, change has been slowed by systemic barriers at all educational levels and complex interactions between the services available. Critical to change is the availability of post-secondary training. Online learning that is accessible seems to be the most likely venue to produce effective change. Recent Federal legislation supports this premise with mandates that online courses be accessible for all learners. The three strategies we recommend in this paper can significantly increase accessibility in online courses without undue utilization of time or need for advanced training.
