Computer Science Pre-service Teachers’ Competencies for Pedagogical Content Knowledge

Abstract: This paper looks at important competencies relating to the pedagogical content knowledge of pre-service teachers specializing in computer science in Germany. We based our study on the competencies model developed by the Competences for Teaching Computer Science (KUI) research group. In our study, we use video recordings and interviews to analyze these important competencies. Additionally, we compared these competencies with the competencies of professional teachers to investigate if they differ and if they do, where they differ. Another important topic that we discuss in this paper is how we can use our findings and the material to measure pre-service teachers’ computational thinking skills.
