Abstract: In this paper the authors share how they prepare preservice teachers to teach about bullying through Young Adult Literature and a critical digital literacies approach. The aim is to encourage beginning teachers to think critically about their preconceived ideas regarding bullying through participation in literature circles and the creation of lesson/unit plans based on eight YA books that deal with the important topic of bullying. Our aim is to help our PSTs become not only proficient users of technology, but more importantly, critical thinkers about and producers of technology and digital tools while promoting civic engagement and responsibility. The paper explores PSTs’ shifting views of bullying and their roles as teachers dealing with this phenomenon, as well as how the creation of digital tools and resources to teach YAL and digital literacies skills, might encourage them to engage their students in learning in a more active and civically meaningful way.
