Abstract: The purpose of this case study was to determine if student learning outcomes in an undergraduate course differed based upon textbook format (web-based e-textbook or traditional hardcopy) used by the students. Learning was measured by student performance on homework assignments and exams. The student’s choice of textbook format did not differ based upon demographic attributes. Students who used e-textbooks earned significantly lower mean scores on homework, exams, and the final course grade. The percentage of students using e-textbooks who successfully completed the course was significantly lower than for those who used hardcopy books. For instructors considering the use of e-textbooks, the impact on student learning should be considered. Further research is needed to determine (a) if findings from this study are applicable to other student populations and settings, (b) why students choose e-textbooks, and (c) what features of e-textbooks and e-readers are most beneficial to learning.
