The Potential of Digital Media to Promote Young Children’s Mathematics Learning: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial
Abstract: This study of preschoolers and their families aimed to understand: 1) family use and interactions around media, 2) how caregivers and digital media support children’s math learning and approaches to learning, and 3) how findings may inform teacher supported interactions around media as well as media resource development to bridge home- and school-based practices. The study was a randomized controlled trial where participating families were assigned to either (1) a PBS KIDS treatment group or (2) a Business As Usual (BAU) comparison group. Treatment families received technology, a curated digital experience, and supports for joint engagement. BAU families were asked to continue their typical behaviors with regard to children’s technology and media use. Results indicated statistically significant improvements in ordinal numbers, spatial relationships, and 3D shapes, and greater joint engagements with media between children and parents in the treatment group.
