Abstract: Two independent studies using a blog and a forum, are presented side by side in the effort to reveal the complexity of learning interaction in CMC environments. The discussion is guided by the Community of Inquiry model and the concept of learner autonomy. While both studies are from different contexts and employ different research methodologies, they inform us about the commonalities concerning asynchronous learning, namely the elements guiding a community of learning and autonomy of the learner. The parallels drawn, offer considerations for use of technological tools in teaching.
