Abstract: The negative impacts of compulsive use (CU) of social media is prevalent among college students due to their high immersion in social networking environments. In this study, we examine antecedents that serve as predictors of social media CU, as well as the influence of CU on the academic, social, and physical performance of college students in Taiwan. Gender is used as a moderator for the study. Results indicate that CU for both that male and female college students is predicted by hedonic technology characteristics. However, male students are less likely to be compulsive users if they utilize social media as a tool to strengthen their friendships online. Also, CU of social media has a more significant negative impact on the academic performance for male students than female students. In this presentation, the theoretical and practical contributions of the findings are discussed.
