Abstract: This paper reports on findings from a qualitative research study that investigated the professional development practices of public high school teachers as they learn how to use information technology. In this study, the Activity Theory framework has been described, extended and applied as the primary method for analysis. The study shows that Activity Theory can provide actionable knowledge through the identification of contradictions or tensions in the system to help bring about a smoother transition in the change process.
