Abstract: Teaching media production classes in an online environment creates a new set of challenges for students and instructors alike. The decrease in pricing of professional grade digital audio recording, graphics and video editing software coupled with an increased availability of prosumer grade cameras and computing equipment at discount prices has helped to increase user generated content and the notion that anyone can be a media producer. This paper provides an overview the needs of current students, based on the needs of employers, the current landscape of four-year communication degree programs and the experience of three higher education professionals in their teaching of media production courses. From pre-production, through production and even into post-production, the ability to effectively convey these concepts is possible with the help of a few tools and some planning.
