Abstract: One of several assessments used at our university to strengthen program evaluation and prepare candidates to teach is the education Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA). The edTPA is a performance assessment of effective teaching designed for novice teachers. This instrument requires teacher candidates to demonstrate competency in planning, instruction, and assessment. In this session, presenters describe the implementation of the edTPA in a distance education program for preservice special education candidates. Presenters describe candidate performance on rubrics and identify the strengths and challenges of our candidates pertaining to planning, instruction, and assessment. Presenters share various methods to support distance education candidates participating in the edTPA. Lessons learned and next steps are discussed.
