Abstract: Traditional concepts of literacy have given way to expanded and flexible definitions that account for changes in society, language, and technology. Teachers of English language arts are attempting to navigate the impact of multimedia in the literacy experiences and skills that students bring with them to the classroom. Strategies for teaching reading can be utilized to help students make connections between print and multimedia texts and help them to be better prepared to make meaning in any new or challenging text that they encounter. Professional development experiences that allow teachers to better understand the role of multimedia in English language arts will be presented.
