Share Paper: Using Game-Design to Teach Systems Thinking Skills in a 6th Grade School Library STEM Enrichment Program

Abstract: Game-design, an ill-structured design task, activates metacognitive skills that enable children to grapple with and create unique, concrete representations of otherwise abstract ideas. This mixed method study conducted during the 2015-2016 school year in a school library makerspace, investigates the growth in ability of 6th grade science students to tackle ill-structured problems in a game-design context. The game-design program, delivered as part of a school library STEM Enrichment sequence, develops student game designers who use their newfound design and problem-solving skills to create games targeting selected 6th grade science standards.
