Abstract: As we examine new technologies to determine their worth both to ourselves and to our students, we might stop to reflect on our personal professional development. In this paper we reflect on the self-guided process that we used to explore the potential of 3D printing and to generate a unique simulated artifact to take into our classes. We examine what attracted us to this new tool; ponder how we, as educators, can make this process real; and summarize what we have learned.
