Share Paper: Student Perceptions about Using Second Life in Online Communication: A Case Study

Abstract: The uses of multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) have the potential to add to the communication of an online course. Additionally, MUVEs such as Second Life add a sense of presence to distance education classrooms. The purpose of this project was to examine students’ experiences in the use of Second Life, a multi-user virtual environment. Participants hosted turn-based virtual tours with their classmates. They completed open-ended questionnaires about their experiences and wrote a paper describing their tours. In addition, they wrote about their experiences and the expectations of future use.
