Abstract: This paper examines the development of the “teacher exception” to the U.S. Copyright Law. It discusses how the changes to the U.S. Copyright Act implemented in 1976 affected the “teacher exception” and fueled the creation of Intellectual Property Policies in higher education institutions. The paper concludes with an examination of the implications of recent court rulings on the ownership issue and the possible demise of the “teacher exception.”
