Move In-Class Discussion Online to Engage Distance Learning Students

Abstract: Student engagement plays an essential role in distance learning performance and achievement. This qualitative study aims to discuss how web-based discussion can be used as a strategy to increase student engagement in distance learning. Specifically, this study focused on the effect of using online discussion that asks distance leaners to post their discussion online instead of talking in class. In this study Padlet was utilized as the platform to support web-based discussion. Interviews and documents analysis were utilized to discuss how web-based discussion could help distance learning students engage in learning. Results indicated that web-based discussion had significant impact on distance learners’ engagement, including high quality interactions and development of effective learning strategies.
