Twitter + Voxer: Educators’ Complementary Uses of Multiple Social Media
Abstract: Social media such as Facebook and Pinterest have become sites of self-directed professional learning and networking for some educators In this paper, we describe how educators combine the use of two specific digital tools, Twitter and Voxer, for professional learning We gathered data from 240 educators via an electronic survey that was primarily focused on their professional use of Voxer However, we uncovered that almost all of the participants also engaged in professional activities via other social media In particular, almost all of the participants reported using Twitter professionally, and a number of respondents explained connections between their Voxer and Twitter use in their responses to qualitative survey items We describe how the these two social media tools appeared to complement each other in ways that participants found beneficial We discuss implications of such multi-platform activities for educators, teacher educators, and education researchers
