Abstract: In this roundtable proposal we discuss possible pedagogical strategies teachers at the 3-12 grade levels can use to guide students through the complex science and engineering activity known as Rube Goldberg, and share lessons learned from our with Rube Goldberg and preservice teachers. Approaches include requiring students to display physical science phenomena, incorporating new technologies, and integrating art. In addition, metacognitive questions can help to reinforce the learning gains facilitated by Rube Goldberg. These approaches will not limit or stifle imagination or creativity but rather offer students opportunities to tackle Rube Goldberg challenges from multiple perspectives.
