Evaluating the Quality of Instructional Videos Using a Data Visualization Tool
Abstract: More and more instructional videos are available online as a source of self-learning. In K-12 schools and universities, instructor-created videos are also widely used, especially in online courses. Those videos are then used directly by students. However, for instructional videos in the public domain, learners choose a video more randomly than selectively. A procedure of quality evaluation is missing before a video lesson can be used by teachers or students. This paper presents the authors' experiences to evaluate instructional videos both from public domain and those created by teacher education students in a western state university. A method of data visualization is used to analyze and present the qualities of the videos with a content analysis software MAXQDA. The software, coding methods, procedures, and tips of quality evaluation will be described with examples.
