Study on “Familiarity” When Reading Using an Electronic Medium
Abstract: In this research, “familiarity” was focused when reading using an electronic medium. The learning effect, due to the difference in “familiarity”, was examined by using a visual index (measurement of gazing point movement using eye mark recorder EMR-8), and a physiological index (measurement of stress value using Nipro salivary amylase monitor). One of the results showed that the participants who had used electronic media for a short period of time tended to increase the number of gazing point movements when reading using electronic media than when reading with paper. Furthermore, people with a long time of using electronic media tended to increase their stress value when reading with paper; this tendency reduced when reading with the electronic medium. This research revealed that reading methods and physiological responses when using the electronic medium differ, depending on the difference in “familiarity” with electronic media.
