Student-Generated Discussion Activity: A Lever for Building a Community of Learners in an Asynchronous Online Learning
Abstract: Online learning has now become an integral part of the educational landscape. Despite many efforts that have been made in an online learning research and practice community, many issues still remain to be addressed. One of them is its social-isolation problem. A great deal of research has been done to overcome this issue, including establishing teaching presence through designing a student-instructor collaborative work, providing immediate feedback, and facilitating discourse. All these efforts come down to a pedagogical endeavor to establish a community of learners in an online learning environment where students actively engage in learning from one another. In line with such efforts, this preliminary case study aims at introducing a new possible pedagogical strategy using a student-generated discussion activity as a lever for building a community of learners in an asynchronous online learning environment.
