Abstract: Quality health care is a necessity for many people. Medical students are required to develop a level of competence in patient diagnosis before they start practicing on live patients. This paper discusses the effectiveness of utilizing virtual patients (VPs) in on-line practicum courses for medical education students, summarizes research on the role of online practicum courses in medical education, and discusses the impact which artificial intelligence (AI) will have on medical education.
