Abstract: As the number of online learners has grown over the years, an increasing emphasis has been placed by colleges and universities on instituting benchmarks for assessing the quality of the online learning experience, and particularly, on the quality of the online courses themselves. This focus has arisen out of student retention issues in online courses as well as a general concern about the quality of online courses. While there exist numerous rubrics to evaluate the quality of online courses, selection of a rubric best suited to meet the unique needs of an institute of higher education can be daunting. This paper outlines how one large eastern public university came to select and adopt a quality rubric for the development of online courses.
