Abstract: This poster session represents a look at using an Alexa-enabled technology device and its use in a classroom setting. In addition, student privacy implications are examined. The Problem: Educators are using technology devices and resources which disclose Student personally identifiable information and violate student privacy laws. One such piece of technology is the Echo Dot by Amazon with the Alexa voice assistant. Many teachers may latch onto emerging technologies, such as an Echo Dot, in order to streamline processes within a classroom. What was done: Federal, State, and Local laws were examined and compared with the Amazon User Agreement and the Amazon Privacy Policy to determine whether student privacy rights were violated by the usage of the device within the classroom. Why this is important: Some teachers are eager adopters of new technology. By introducing new technology into a classroom setting, a child’s privacy rights could be violated. It is the responsibility of all educators to protect the students within their care. By bringing an Alexa voice assistant device into the classroom, teachers may be exposing educational records as well as other lawful personally identifiable information. No educator should harm children or break laws by using technology within the classroom.
