Innovators Playground: Computer Science & Computational Thinking Made Practical through Student-Made Working Models of Everyday Digital Devices
Date
April 8, 2020
Time:
12:30 PM-1:30 PM
Descriptiopn
More and more states are implementing a K-12 integration of computer science standards, for which many teachers and teacher candidates have little foundational knowledge. An approach will be demonstrated whereby many computer science standards and computational thinking objectives can be met by having students (appropriate for grades 6 - 12) create working models of digital devices that they see around them in their everyday life. Examples range from traffic lights and kitchen timers to digital music players and robotic vehicles. Join us in the Innovation Playground to see how the BBC micro:bit can be programmed with a simple block language, and how even the simplest device opens the door to deeper challenges.
