Abstract: Because of the COVD-19 pandemic, a data structures course changed from in-person to a hybrid format with flipped instruction. To maintain students’ level of active engagement in the course, many lessons involved using dynamic models or physical manipulatives; however, the instructor would not be able to formatively assess students while they engaged in these activities. In response, she had students demonstrate their understanding by making Flipgrid videos. Analysis of these videos show that Flipgrid can be used to clearly assess what understandings and misconceptions students have when learning new concepts.
