Abstract: Peer and faculty interaction in online courses has long been relegated to the depths of repeated posts on stale, overused discussion boards. Authentic discussions have stymied even the most qualified and technologically astute online instructors. To a forlorn instructor, it might seem that authentic community in online courses is a myth never to fully materialize outside of prescribed synchronous meeting times. Enter FlipGrid, a free online video conversation tool, which boasts the ability for students and instructors alike to engage in real, engaged conversations asynchronously in a modern, easy-to-use platform. Because the tool is engaging to use, discussions feel less forced, and students are more likely to naturally engage with each other and the content. Students even report feeling a stronger connection to peers and the course as a result of the tool. In this session, presenters will share their experiences using FlipGrid as an online discussion tool, as well as student feedback and course outcomes. Real examples of FlipGrid content will be shared, as will implementation ideas, resources, and good practices for both online and hybrid courses. Finally, participants will have the opportunity to use the tool themselves within a FlipGrid test course using their cell phones or laptops. Time will be provided to adapt FlipGrid to participant specific goals and outcomes, and each of the four presenters will break into four breakout rooms to more easily facilitate this process.
