Abstract: While almost everyone would agree that innovating teaching to activate and engage students in Higher Education (HE) in their learning is important, doing so is not always as easy as one might hope. One reason is the rather widespread skepticism and resistance against new teaching methods. In this paper we focus on the innovating potential of Problem Based Learning (PBL) as a method to better prepare students for the professional tasks they will be facing. We present and discuss issues encountered and solutions found while introducing Problem Based Learning in 10 Caribbean and 5 European universities in the context of training young urban professionals to handle contemporary urban problems and challenges.
