Video Killed the Written Discussion Star: Preservice Teacher Perceptions of Flipgrid in an Educational Technology Course
Abstract: Flipgrid is an app or website which allows respondents to record video responses for peers and instructors in place of traditional written discussion forums. This quantitative research study will examine approximately 70 pre-service teacher education students on their perceptions of Flipgrid in an introductory educational technology course. Statistical analysis will examine perceptions related to Flipgrid as a learning tool, functionality of the platform, and affect on motivation for the course. Respondents are enrolled at a medium-sized private Midwestern university and completed the questionnaire at the end of their course. The study aims to better understand attitudes toward video discussion forms in place of traditional written options found within a learning management system. The findings hope to help better understand how teacher education programs can implement video discussion forums to promote interaction, engagement, and development of technology skills of pre-service teachers.
