Abstract: The research aims to seek why and why students do not use online support offered by learning support centers. The research was conducted at a university in Japan. The study first describes a history of learning support centers in Japan. Second, the situation surrounding a Japanese university from April 2021 to July 2021 will be explained as it was a peculiar period because of the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. Then, the results of the interview with three students will be analyzed. The findings of the study revealed that a student who especially preferred to use face-to-face support wanted to communicate with tutors as his pseudo senior student of club activities. Also, students whose purpose is clear, such as finishing the assignments, seem not to seriously care about the difference between face-to-face and online methods. Further studies may examine whether the tendencies will continue even after COVID-19 pandemic is settled down.
