Abstract: One specific aspect of the expectations of the workplace is usually referred to as soft skills or 21st century skills, which teachers in HE often assume to be developed before students arrive on campus. As a result, their teaching fails to include 21st century skills as learning outcomes. We explore how 21st century skills are connected to executive functions (EF) as studied by cognitive neuroscience. EF develops well into early adulthood and can therefore not be expected to have fully developed before entering HE.
