Capturing the Moment: Using 'Screencasting' to Provide Formative Feedback to Learners.
Abstract: Much of the assessment literature highlights the importance of formative feedback on the learning process, however providing this feedback can be time consuming. This is especially true in times of rising class numbers and increasing pressures on teaching faculty. This case study examines the use of ‘screencasting’ (video screen capture) using web 2.0 tools as a way of providing the learners with formative feedback on their work, while speeding up the process and documenting the teacher’s response. The subjects in the case are all learners in a higher education context and a second language environment in the Middle East. The case discusses the challenges faced and how these were addressed, the reaction and feedback of the learners and how this model could be further developed and scaled.
